Including the ones that cost us money to answer honestly — what you can safely do yourself, when a door does not need replacing, and how to tell whether the problem is the door or the opener before anyone charges you to find out.

How do I test whether my garage door is safe?

Two tests, both free and both take a minute. First, the balance test: pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener, lift the door to waist height and let go. It should stay put. Second, the reversal test: lay a length of two-by-four flat on the floor in the door's path and close the door — it must contact the wood and reverse. If either test fails, stop using the door until it is fixed.

How do I know if my garage door opener is too old to be safe?

Look for photo-eye sensors near the bottom of each track, roughly six inches off the floor. Federal law and UL 325 have required entrapment protection on residential openers manufactured since January 1, 1993. If your opener has no sensors at all, it predates that requirement, and no repair makes it compliant — it should be replaced.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

This is the one repair we genuinely advise against. A torsion spring under tension stores a large amount of energy and releases it in a fraction of a second if a winding bar slips. Most other garage door work — replacing a roller, tightening a hinge, realigning a sensor — is reasonable DIY. Spring replacement is not.

What should I do if the door is stuck open and I need to secure the house?

If the springs are intact, pull the red release cord and lower the door by hand; it should feel manageable. If you heard a bang, or the door feels extremely heavy, stop — a spring has likely broken, and without it the door can drop hard enough to injure you or damage a vehicle. Call us instead; we run 24 hours.

Maintenance and wear

How often should a garage door be serviced?

Once a year for normal use, twice if the door is the household's main entrance and cycles eight or ten times a day. In this region autumn is the right timing, before the first hard freeze — cold weather is when marginal parts give up, and that is exactly when you least want to be waiting in a driveway.

What should I lubricate, and with what?

A garage-door-specific silicone or lithium spray on hinges, roller bearings, springs, bearing plates and the opener rail. Not WD-40, which is a solvent rather than a lubricant. And never the track itself — lubricant there collects grit and turns into grinding paste.

Why is my garage door suddenly so loud?

Worn or dry rollers, in most cases. Builder-grade doors come with bare steel rollers that have no sealed bearing, and they typically need replacing at five to seven years. After rollers, the next suspects are loose hinges, a chain-drive opener, and bearings in the spring assembly starting to fail.

How long do garage door springs last?

A standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, where one cycle is one open plus one close. At four cycles a day that is roughly seven years. A door opening ten times a day may only get three or four years from a standard spring, and a high-cycle spring rated 25,000 cycles or more is usually better value in that case.

Do I need to do anything special in winter here?

One thing genuinely helps: rinse road salt off the bottom of the door a couple of times through the winter. Salt comes in on the tires and settles on the lowest parts — the bottom section, the bottom brackets and the cable ends — and that is where doors in this region rust out first.

Cost and repair versus replace

How much does garage door repair cost in Cincinnati?

It depends on which part failed, and we do not quote sight-unseen because that means either padding the number to cover the worst case or revising it upward on arrival. The diagnosis is free: the 21-point inspection costs nothing and you get the written findings and a price before anything is touched.

Is it worth repairing an old door or should I replace it?

Usually repair. A door with sound structure and no rusted-through sections is worth keeping, and springs, cables and rollers cost a fraction of a new door. Replacement makes sense when the bottom section has rusted through, when several panels are creased, or when the door is uninsulated on an attached garage.

Can you replace just one damaged panel?

Often, yes — provided the manufacturer still produces a matching section for your door's model and panel design. On doors under roughly fifteen years old a match is usually available. On older doors designs get discontinued, and we will tell you that rather than fitting something approximate.

Do you charge extra for nights, weekends or Northern Kentucky?

No on all three. The visit and the inspection are free at any hour, and Boone, Kenton, Campbell and Dearborn counties are inside our normal service area with no travel surcharge.
