Why Garage Door Springs Break in a Cincinnati Winter

Cold does not make steel brittle enough to snap on its own. The mechanism: it's cycling, not cold

A torsion spring is a coil of hardened steel wire wound tight and holding enormous stored energy — that stored energy is what lifts the door. Every time the door opens and closes, the spring winds and unwinds, and that repeated flexing is what engineers call a cycle. A standard residential torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles: one cycle per open-and-close. A household that runs the door four times a day reaches that number in roughly seven years, which is why so many springs in a given neighborhood — installed around the same time as the houses were built — start failing in the same few winters.

Cincinnati sits in the Ohio River valley, and the winter here is defined less by how cold it gets and more by how often it crosses back and forth over freezing. January lows average in the mid-20s Fahrenheit, but the pattern is rarely a flat cold snap — it's a freeze, a thaw, a freeze again, sometimes within the same week. Each of those swings expands and contracts the steel very slightly. On a spring with plenty of cycles left, that is nothing. That is why the failure so often lands on the first hard freeze of the year: not because cold weather breaks springs, but because a spring that was already close to the end runs out of margin exactly when the temperature swings start.

Road salt attacks the hardware around the spring

Springs get the attention, but they are not the only casualty of a Cincinnati winter. Salt spray comes off tires and into the garage all season, and it settles on whatever sits lowest: the bottom section of the door, the bottom brackets, the rollers, the track. The bottom brackets are the part that should worry you most, because they anchor the cables that are under the same spring tension as the spring itself. Rust on a bottom bracket is not cosmetic — it's a second failure point developing in parallel with the spring, and it's the single most common thing found failing on 'car trapped in the garage' calls, where the door came off track or a cable let go rather than the spring itself.

This is also why a spring failure in winter is more often than not a two-part problem: a spring at the end of its cycle life, on hardware that has spent a season absorbing road salt. A written inspection catches the second half before it becomes its own emergency.

Why both springs get replaced together

Most residential garage doors run two torsion springs, wound to work as a matched pair. They go on the same day and see the same number of cycles, so if one has reached the end of its life, the other is almost always right behind it — often within weeks, sometimes on the very next hard freeze. Replacing only the spring that already broke saves a little money today and very often means a second service call, and a second missed morning, before spring. It is also why, when we're on site for a broken spring, we check and quote the second one rather than assume it has years left just because it hasn't failed yet.

Warning signs before a full break

  • A loud bang from the garage — that is almost always the spring itself letting go, not the door or the opener
  • The door suddenly feels far heavier to lift by hand, or won't stay up when disconnected from the opener
  • The opener strains, reverses, or stops partway instead of completing the cycle
  • The door only opens a few inches before stalling
  • A visible gap in the coil of the spring above the door — the clearest sign a spring has already gone
  • One side of the door looks noticeably lower than the other when it's open

Is it safe to open the garage door by hand after a spring breaks?

It can be done carefully for a single emergency exit, but the door will be far heavier than normal and can drop suddenly if the second spring or a cable is also compromised — which, as above, is common in winter. Don't leave a car trapped overnight assuming it's fine; if you must get a car out, have someone support the door while it's raised and don't leave it unsupported partway up.
